Care for Special Needs of Children Including Autism

  • Awareness Creation to reduce the Ignorance and Stigma associated with the condition.
  • The STAR project of the initiative will be the establishment of “SPECIAL CENTRES” across the various Senatorial Districts of the State. These centres will be established in existing Secondary Schools in the state. The centres will be equipped with the necessary learning aids.
  • Specialized training for staff involved in teaching Autistic individuals.
  • Equipping of allocated space with the specialized learning aids required by these children.

Being a voice for children with special needs, especially autism, is of utmost importance. Autism is a developmental disability caused by various factors, including genetics and the environment. It affects behaviour, emotions, and communication.

The true prevalence of autism in our environment remains largely unknown, as many individuals go undiagnosed. However, studies in Nigeria indicate a prevalence of 1 in 100, similar to other countries.

Unfortunately, society largely neglects people with autism. There is limited awareness about the condition, and treatment and educational centres for these individuals are non-existent in Delta State. To address this, Her Excellency plans awareness campaigns to educate the public and reduce stigma. She also intends to collaborate with the Ministry of Health to identify and diagnose individuals with autism and establish treatment centres across the three senatorial districts.

Additionally, special educational centres will be established in each district, equipped with trained instructors, psychologists, counsellors, and learning aids. Collaboration with the Ministry of Basic Education, Women Affairs, and Health will be crucial in achieving this goal. Initial surveys, advocacy meetings, and interactions with existing centres have already been conducted.
